Half of Quebec’s Uber drivers don’t tell their insurers
Airbnb hosts are just as bad
The Canadian Press on June 14, 2016
Nearly half (44 percent) of Quebec residents who drive for Uber or rent out their homes through Airbnb don’t share that information with their insurer, a new survey from the Chambre d’assurance de dommages in Montreal found.
The survey also revealed a quarter of those who drive for hire or rent out their homes get into an accident or need to make a claim, which aren’t always covered by their insurance company.
If a policyholder doesn’t fully inform their insurer of their activities and the non-disclosure results in a material change of risk, the insurer may be under no obligation to honour the policy, the IBC points out.
Just over a fifth (21 percent) of the 18-24 age group participate in the sharing economy, compared to 13 percent among the 25-34 cohort.
The Chambre d’assurance de dommanges polled 1,004 Quebec adults from May 16-18, 2016.
