Aviva Canada is applauding the work of Toronto Police Service in addressing the serious issue of insurance fraud. Earlier this week, due to the efforts of Toronto Police Service acting on a complaint made by Aviva Canada, Mr. Christopher Xuereb made his first appearance in court on charges of Fraud and Public Mischief in connection with an alleged fraudulent vehicle theft.

Insurance fraud costs consumers more than $1 billion per year. Aviva Canada is committed to protecting
the premiums of honest customers by tackling fraud schemes such as staged car thefts for financial gain.
This type of scheme is one of the most common auto insurance frauds in Canada which, not only results
in higher premiums for customers but, also ties up valuable police time and resources.

On August 16, 2015, Mr. Xuereb, a former Aviva Canada customer reported to police that his car had
been stolen from a parking lot. He submitted a claim to Aviva Canada for the stolen car, as well as new
tires and rims he allegedly installed prior to the theft. Police recovered Mr. Xuereb’s car, with an interior
damaged by fire rendering the vehicle a complete loss, on September 3, 2015. Due to the nature of the
theft and recovery, Aviva Canada decided to investigate the claim.

During Aviva Canada’s investigation into Mr. Xuereb’s claim, he knowingly provided false and misleading
information under oath as well as a forged document. As a result, Mr. Xuereb’s claim for the loss of the
car, the tires and the rims was denied.

Aviva Canada presented their findings to Toronto Police Service, who charged Mr. Xuereb on September
15, 2016 with:

  • Fraud Over $5,000, and

  • Public mischief

  • .

Mr. Xuereb next appears in court on November 14, 2016.

“Staged vehicle thefts for monetary gain continue to create a financial burden for our honest
customers,” said Christopher Lang, Senior Manager, Fraud Management, Aviva Canada. “Aviva Canada
takes a zero tolerance approach to anyone who commits fraud. In an effort to protect the premiums of
our honest policyholders, we will continue reporting instances of fraud that we uncover to police and
making an effort to deter would‐be fraudsters.”
