Piracy incidents down in Q3
A total of 96 incidents were recorded globally in quarter.

A total of 96 acts of piracy were recorded globally in Q3 2016, with the majority being criminal boardings (59%), followed by hijackings (18%) and attacks (10%). Overall, the level of piracy is declining, according to Naya International Q3 Piracy Assessment.
West Africa
Piracy activity in Q3 2016 declined in severity compared to the previous quarter, when 16 attacks and nine hijackings were reported. Three attacks and five hijackings occurred in Q3 while 18 criminal boardings were reported. However, the total number of incidents in Q3 2016 (35) has been similar to recent periods, with 42 incidents recorded in Q2 2016 and 30 in Q3 2015.
Southeast Asia
In Q3 2016 there were 28 piracy incidents in Southeast Asia. This represents a 22% decrease in the number of incidents compared to Q2 2016 when 36 incidents were recorded, and a significant 57% decrease from 66 incidents registered in Q3 2015. Criminal boardings continue to account for the majority of incidents comprising 61% of pirate activity. Seven hijackings were recorded in the quarter; three of these were confirmed to have been carried out by the Islamist militant Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) and involved crew kidnapping. No extended duration cargo theft (EDCT) incidents were recorded in Q3.
East Africa and Indian Ocean
Two incidents were reported across the wider East African region in Q3 2016, representing a 75% reduction in the number of incidents compared with the previous quarter. One incident occurred within the revised HRA, with one further incident recorded in Mozambique. In line with previous quarters, a consistent decline in piracy incidents has been observed as the total number of incidents was reduced by 80% in Q3 2016 compared to the corresponding period in 2015. The number of incidents in the revised HRA is at a historic low with a drop of 52% over the last nine months since the revision of the zone in December 2015 when compared to the same period last year.
