The Co-operators appoints new COO of Sovereign


Steve Phillips appointed Executive Vice President, Chief Operating Officer of The Sovereign General Insurance Company.

The Co-operators president and CEO, Rob Wesseling, on Tuesday announced the appointment of Steve Phillips as Executive Vice President, Chief Operating Officer of Co-operators subsidiary, The Sovereign General Insurance Company.

The role will be effective as of January 9th, 2017.


Phillips replaces Wesseling, who was COO of Sovereign before his appointment as CEO of The Co-operators in August.


“I am thrilled to join the Sovereign team, and have the opportunity to serve our clients, broker partners and communities,” Phillips told Canadian Insurance Top Broker. “The Co-operators group of companies play a critically important role in Canada and I am excited to join the team as we progress along the worthy journey towards achieving mutual success with all stakeholders.”


Phillips has an MBA, Marketing & Finance from the Richard Ivey School of Business and a BA in Economics from the University of Western Ontario.


In his new role, Phillips will provide leadership to the team and will be accountable for the company’s underwriting performance and growth. Phillips has more than 20 years’ experience as a leader in the financial services sector, and owned a consulting company where he helped financial services organizations develop and deliver customer and growth strategies. He also worked in leadership roles at two Canadian banks.
