Ford Escape’s structural changes boost small overlap front protection
Safety rating moves from “poor” to “acceptable”
Staff on August 5, 2016
The 2017 Ford Escape received an “acceptable” rating on its small overlap front test, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety reports.
Introduced in 2012, the small overlap front test replicates what happens when the front driver-side corner of a vehicle collides with another vehicle or an object such as a tree or utility pole.
When the 2013 Escape was tested for small overlap protection, the dummy’s head was poorly protected by the car’s airbags. Injuries to the left hip would be likely, and injuries to the lower legs would be possible.
While the new model isn’t a significant redesign, the dummy’s head was better protected, and there is a low risk of injury.
