The B.C. Earthquake Alliance and Insurance Bureau of Canada (IBC) are working together to present Canada’s largest earthquake preparedness drill on Thursday, October 20 at 10:20 a.m.
“More than 3,000 earthquakes occur in British Columbia each year. Most are too small to be felt, but the risk of one big enough to cause major damage is real,” said Dave Cockle, president of the BC Earthquake Alliance. “Participating in the Great British Columbia ShakeOut is an excellent way for your family or organization to take one small step towards preparing to survive and recover quickly.”
The drill is intended as an opportunity to practice earthquake preparedness, an important pillar in emergency management. “I encourage all British Columbians to register and take part – and Drop, Cover and Hold On,” said the Honourable Naomi Yamamoto, minister of state for Emergency Preparedness.”
Fortis BC, BC Hydro, BCAA, HEMBC and Ivanhoe Cambridge are also sponsors of this year’s event.
