Economical is working with Quebec-based groups that encourage elementary students to prevent violence.

The company announced Tuesday that it would be offering three years of sponsorship funding, $49,000 in total, towards the Unité sans violence (Unity without violence) program.

The program teaches students to stand up for themselves and take action against bullying, verbal abuse or intimidation. It shows them how to react to those behaviours in a positive way. It also works with local police forces in parts of Quebec. Info-crime Montreal, for example, is part of the initiative. It provides monetary rewards to encourage citizens to report crime to police, the media or other community members. The group will receive $12,000 from Economical, while another, Échec au crime, will receive $37,000.

“We strongly believe in this program and how it is educating young people about how they can help curb violence in their own schools,” said Tom McConnell, president of Échec au crime. “It’s all about empowering our kids to take ownership of their school environment and become stronger and more confident in their lives.”
