Is Lawrence Marazzi on to a winner with the Saietta R electric motorbike?A five-year labour of love seems to have borne fruit for entrepreneur Lawrence Marazzi. Seven prototypes later, he has brought forward a potential game-changer to the motorbike market: the Saietta R.

The Saietta R taps into the emerging electric bike market, which is expected to close the gap on the petrol bike market by 2015. Despite being part of the electric revolution, the Saietta R looks nothing like pre-existing electric bikes and puts them to shame with its 0-60 mph in 3.9 seconds. It’s even safer than a petrol engine bike, according to its creator:

“Petrol bikes feature Victorian plumbing,” Marazzi told the Daily Telegraph. “You’ve got a highly carcinogenic, massively explosive liquid called petrol inches away from a 900 to 1,000-degree exhaust pipe.”

Marazzi, a former F1 and aerospace engineer, revealed that the Saietta R had set a new benchmark for electric bikes. It’s the first motorbike to use F1 composite technology, which is a reason behind it weighing just 200kg and giving the rider such direct and tactile control. He also boasted of its prowess in being able to “run 100 miles with a 12-mile reserve on a single charge”.

Marazzi’s intention is to sell 9,500 units by 2018, and he says the bike was designed in such a way as to make it easy to reproduce. He is hoping the lack of any tax for electric bikes in the UK and US will incentivise people taking the plunge to go electric.

The bike takes three-and-a-half hours to fully charge, and comes with an on-board plug-in charger. Charging will cost just 60 pence, which makes it a whopping 60 times more cost-efficient than conventional gas motorbikes.

Mark Northwood, the first person to own the Saietta R, said: “The sensation is surreal. The Saietta R is quiet, calm and cool – literally – while delivering an uninterrupted surge from zero to the speed limit.”

Mr Northwood quipped that “the only distraction is the heads turning to take in the spectacular shape zipping by”.

The 70,000 hours that Marazzi invested in developing the Saietta R appear to have paid off – it seems to be racing ahead of the competition.
