Insurance fraud costs Canada $1.6 billion each year

Fraud over $5,000 is amongst the charges laid against Mark Haselden after he reported to police that his Ford F150 truck was stolen, reports Aviva Canada.
The insurer denied Haselden’s claims on the vehicle and its contents after it discovered that he had provided false and misleading information, including lying under oath on two occasions.
Aviva Canada estimated that insurance fraud costs Canada $1.6 billion annually.

Haselden reported the theft of his truck on December 10, 2015, with the truck discovered eight days later by police. The truck showed no signs of forced entry, however the interior had been vandalized, its contents were missing and a broken off key was found in the ignition.
After Aviva Canada investigated and denied the claim, the company presented its findings to the Durham Regional Police Service, which charged Haselden on Monday with fraud over $5000, fraud under $5000, public mischief and perjury.
