IIHS awards Hyundai Elantra with top safety award
The rating applies to 2017 Elantras built after March

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has given the redesigned Hyundai Elantra its top award, the “Top Safety Pick+.”
The 2017 Elantra earned good ratings in all crashworthiness categories, including the challenging small overlap test which replicates what happens when the front corner of a vehicle collides with another vehicle or an object like a tree or telephone pole.
The results of the small overlap test are an improvement over the earlier model which earned an acceptable rating with nine inches as the maximum intrusion into the occupant space. In contrast, the new model earned a good rating and had an intrusion of two inches.
To qualify for the “Top Safety Pick+” a vehicle must earn good ratings in the small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraint tests. It also must have an available front crash prevention system that earns an advanced or superior rating.
