Ontario has approved a regulatory change in the Insurance Act so cars that can be hired through an app can buy commercial fleet insurance.
Insurers can now develop policies for Uber and other ride-sharing drivers.
All new policies have to be approved by FSCO, and municipalities have the right to ban ride-sharing if they see fit.
In February, Aviva introduced an endorsement for ride-sharing drivers in Ontario to add to their personal policies. It kicks in when drivers turn on the app to look for passengers and switches off when the passenger leaves the vehicle.
In June, Alberta developed an insurance policy for Uber and other ride-sharing drivers, which covers drivers from the moment they log onto their company’s app to pick up a customer.
Intact, Aviva and Pembridge have started offering coverage to Alberta ride-sharing drivers.
